SOUNDING TYPE
For the Sounding Type brief, I selected the song "Oya (Aw-Yah)" by Babatunde Olatunji because of its strong, repetitive sound, which led me to explore rhythm and its meaning. I experimented with folding paper into a concertina effect and shaping letters by hand. I loved the sharp, straight lines created by the folds, but the letter ‘O’ in “Oya” was difficult to form with straight strokes, leading me to use the phonetic spelling “Aw-Yah” instead. I was inspired by Moroccan and African-style carpets, particularly their stroke patterns, which reminded me of the song’s repetitive drumbeat. My first concept used lines and dots to form letters, but I reconsidered the design due to potential cultural sensitivities. Refocusing my approach, I drew inspiration from Rick Milovanovic’s use of grids for simplicity, creating a 6-box grid and incorporating triangles, echoing elements from my first concept, to form abstract letterforms for the final album cover. The final outcome successfully captures the rhythmic drum beats and repetition present in the song.
